San Fermin in Nueva Orleans: Running of the Bulls, New Orleans Style

Each summer, New Orleanians celebrate San Fermin in Nueva Orleans. Also known as the Running of the Bulls in New Orleans, this annual summer event features an Encierro (bull run) that replicates and pays homage to the world famous Encierro of Pamplona, Spain.

The 10th annual San Fermin in Nueva Orleans takes place July 8-10, 2016. Planning a visit? Here’s what you should know to make the most of the Running of the Bulls:

We do things a little differently in New Orleans.

There’s a key difference between the Running of the Bulls in Spain and the Running of the Bulls in New Orleans: the bulls themselves. Here in New Orleans the bulls are members of the Big Easy Rollergirls, along with lucky participants from other roller derby leagues across the country.

The festivities also include a full weekend of summer fun, with a pre-party on Friday night, July 8 from 5-9pm at Little Gem Saloon (445 S. Rampart Street). The party will feature live music by local favorites Los Poboycitos in addition to an open bar, food and silent auction.

After the big run on Saturday morning, you’ll want to check out La Fiesta de Pantalones, hosted at The Rusty Nail (1100 Constance Street). Don’t miss the final send off on Sunday morning, featuring Ernest Hemingway-inspired contests, food and cocktails.

San Fermin in Nueva Orleans is open to public viewing, but registration is mandatory for access to the festival itself, as well as the pre-party and after parties.
